Happy planning!
Planning your wedding involves a lot of details, and one important aspect is your wedding stationery. From save-the-dates to thank you letters, each piece plays a crucial role in communicating with your guests and creating a cohesive theme for your big day. Let’s dive into each piece of wedding stationery, what they are, what should be included, and when they should be sent out.
Save-the-Dates
Save-the-dates are a fun and informal way to announce your wedding date to your guests and give them a heads up to mark their calendars for your special day. They should include your names, the wedding date, and the location (if known). They can also include a website link for guests to find more information and travel details. This is where many people like to include a picture(s) from their engagement session or even from the day of their engagement. Send save-the-dates 6-8 months before your wedding date, or even earlier if you’re having a destination wedding; the earlier you send these, the better.
Invitations
Invitations are the formal announcement of your wedding and set the tone for your big day. They should include your names, the date, time, and location of the ceremony and reception, RSVP details, and any other pertinent information such as dress code, accommodations, and inclusivity of children. The invite is the first visual-taste of your wedding day theme/essence; make sure it captures the tone you desire your guests to experience when attending your wedding day. Send invitations 6-8 weeks before your wedding date to give guests enough time to RSVP.
RSVPs
RSVP cards are included with your invitations and allow guests to respond with their attendance status. They should include a place for guests to indicate whether they will attend, as well as any dietary restrictions. Some couples choose to ask their guests for song suggestions as well, which can be fun for all involved. Be sure to include a deadline for RSVPs, typically 2-3 weeks before your wedding date, so you have enough time to finalize your guest count and seating arrangements.
Wedding Programs
Wedding programs are handed out to guests at the ceremony and outline the order of events. They should include the names of the wedding party, the ceremony order, any readings or songs, and a personal thank you message to guests. Wedding programs can also serve as a keepsake for guests to remember your special day.
Menus
Menus are typically placed at each table or handed out to guests at the reception. They should include the meal options available, as well as any dietary information or allergens. Menus can add a touch of elegance to your table settings and help guests know what to expect for dinner.
Thank You Letters
Thank you letters are sent to guests after the wedding to express your gratitude for their attendance and any gifts they may have given. They should be personalized and heartfelt, mentioning the gift specifically and how much you appreciate their support. Send thank you letters as soon as possible after your wedding, ideally within a few weeks.
Though that concludes the essential wedding stationery items, many couples choose to highlight more stationery details that add a bit more personality to their wedding day. Below are some quick ideas:
Rehearsal Dinner Invitations: Invitations for your rehearsal dinner are typically sent to close family and members of the wedding party. These can be simple, but make sure to include time, place, and dress code.
Wedding Signage: While not traditional stationery, signage at your wedding can include welcome signs, seating charts, and directional signs to help guests navigate your venue. It’s not every day that your guests get to celebrate in such an exciting atmosphere!
Place Cards: Place cards are used to assign guests to their seats at the reception and can be a nice personalized touch.
Table Numbers: Table numbers, names, or photos are used to identify tables at your reception and can tie into your overall wedding theme. Though table numbers and assigned seating can help organize your reception, some couples allow their guests to choose their seat but still assign them to tables; this is based on personal preference.
Remember, your wedding stationery is an extension of your wedding style and sets the tone for your celebration. Have fun with it and let your personality shine through!
